Health Insurance

Going without health insurance is extremely risk for several reasons. First, if something unfortunate happens, you could be wiped out financially in no time. Furthermore, if something unfortunate happens and you can’t afford to fix the problem, your health could suffer and your life could be at risk. Finally, if you think something unfortunate is happening, and you don’t have medical insurance so you choose not to see a doctor, your condition could worsen, causing burden on both your health and your finances.

Selecting the right health insurance program can be difficult, but one thing is clear: you need some sort of coverage. Since I am a young, single male in good health, I chose a plan with a low premium and high deductible. I figured I would get a cheaper policy that would mainly protect me in the event of something bad happening. I went over a few scenarios in my head. First, what if I got into an accident? After the ambulance, medication, emergency surgery, a few nights in the hospital and some prescription drugs, my bill could total over $30,000. Paying that bill will really set me back, if not entirely bankrupt me. Second scenario, what if I am diagnosed with something extremely serious, such as cancer? A year of treatment can easily run you over a million dollars. Without health insurance, you probably would be refused treatment and left to… well, you know. With insurance, you pay the deductible ($4,000 for me) and the rest of the treatment is paid for.

Choosing between health insurance plans can be quite difficult. You can do plenty of research online, but make sure you call in and get everything clarified before signing up to a plan. Also, shopping around can really help you get a plan that fits you best, so call more than one company. Initially, I found it overwhelming, with all the terms I didn’t fully understand (co-pay, PPO, HMO, in-network, etc), but the sales assistant on the phone really helped me understand what I was getting.

One way I really learned my way around the whole health insurance lingo was to basically go over a bunch of scenarios with the gal on the phone. I would ask “What if….”, and then she would answer and explain why. Her explanations really helped me understand the logic behind the plans and generally what you are covered for and what you aren’t covered for.

So, until we have universal health care (maybe someday?), getting a health insurance plan is a must. Remember to always shop around and don’t be afraid to call and ask questions.
